Opus 118 Harlem School of Music is pleased to announce new scholarships to be awarded in Dorothea Von Haeften’s name to honor her extraordinary life, her compassion and decades long commitment to Opus 118’s mission. Dorothea’s legacy lives on in the artistic accomplishments of a generation of music students in East Harlem. (Learn more about Dorothea’s dedication to Opus 118 in our (Fall 2025 OpusNotes).

Scholarship Details

Beginning this year, Opus 118 teachers will select one or more promising violin students each December for Dorothea von Haeften Scholarships, which will cover 100% tuition for weekly private instruction throughout the spring semester. The scholarships fill a particular need for the organization — general financial aid is awarded at the beginning of the school year, but inevitably new or existing students are identified in the following months who are eager to start private lessons but not able to afford tuition. The Dorothea Von Haeften Scholarships will provide a wonderful opportunity for these students, filling a gap until they are eligible to apply for financial aid for the next school year.
