Fall 2020 COVID-19 Update
Plan for Fall 2020
Since the close of our last school year, the Opus 118 Harlem School of Music community has been involved in a process of reimagining our programming with the goal of continuing to deliver accessible musical and educational experiences in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. As we look ahead to the new school year at Opus 118, health and safety will remain our top priority. To that end, we plan to begin the fall with online instruction, phasing in limited in-person events, classes, lessons and rehearsals when possible. Given the ongoing changes in the COVID-19 situation, it may be necessary for us to flex between online and in-person formats throughout the school year. We are closely monitoring city, state and federal guidelines and recommendations. This outline of our fall plan is the result of that information, as well as input gathered from students, families, staff, faculty, audiences, supporters, medical experts and peer institutions. More detailed information for every program will soon follow to each appropriate group.
After-School Program
* Private lesson instruction begins online only for the fall semester the week of September 21.
* After-School Program group classes and ensemble will fully begin once we return to in-person instruction. Ensemble members will be notified of their ensemble placement prior to the start of lessons and digital assignments and coachings may be given throughout the fall.
* We will evaluate a return to in-person lessons by October 30th and a new decision will be announced then for future months.
* More detailed information regarding the After-School Program calendar and events will soon be sent to registered After-School Program families by email.
In-School Program
* The In-School Program will be on pause until at least January 2021 due to mandates regarding NYC DOE vendors and social distancing. We hope to phase in in-person activity as soon as that becomes possible.
* Families are encouraged to continue violin study through our After-School Program online until our return to school facilities. Registration materials will be distributed to each partner school. Financial aid is available to those who qualify. For more information regarding lessons and more immediate registration materials, please email Hillary at hbonhomme@opus118.org.
Our website will be updated regularly regarding our response to COVID-19 and any impacts it will have on our calendars and events.
