April 21 Opus 118 COVID-19 Update

Dear Opus 118 Harlem School of Music Community,

As we continue to monitor updates and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and in line with other NYC cultural organizations, we have extended the suspension of in-person events at Opus 118 through the end of this school year.

Performances

Due to the Mayor’s announcement canceling all non-essential events through June, all concerts and recitals for this school year have been canceled, including the annual End of Year Concert. We look forward to seeing you at these events next school year!

After-School Program

For the remainder of the spring semester, private lesson instruction will continue to be delivered online. During this time, attendance and scheduling policies remain the same. We will reach out directly to After-School Program families regarding additional online performing opportunities and projects. We are grateful to our faculty and families for adjusting so quickly to this new method.

In-School Program

Informed by recent updates from Mayor De Blasio and the NYC Department of Education, we anticipate that public school instruction will continue to be delivered online for the remainder of the school year. Please visit the DOE web site for the latest alerts. While school remains online, In-School Program group classes are suspended.

Opus 118 staff continues to work off-site during this time and we are available during our normal hours by email and through the Opus 118 phone, 646-842-2775.

Finally, if you’re able to support the Opus 118 community during this difficult time, please consider making a donation today

We remain greatly inspired by your continued commitment to arts education no matter the circumstance and hope that you and your loved ones are well. Thank you for your support during this time and always!

Opus 118 COVID-19 Update

Dear Opus 118 Harlem School of Music Community:

Since yesterday’s continued announcements from the Mayor and Governor, we have additional plans and changes for our programs since our last update. We do not have a report of infection within our community. We are making these decisions out of an abundance of caution at a time when city and state officials are universally recommending social distancing and limiting movement around New York City.

With a very heavy heart, we have made the difficult decision to suspend on-premises instruction for our After-School and In-School Programs beginning this Monday through spring break ending April 19th, 2020.

We are working as quickly as possible to have as much online instruction for our After-School private lessons happen as we can, starting with Monday activities.

While public schools currently remain open, we have also decided that the In-School Program will not operate until after spring break. More information will follow once we have a clearer picture of how the school schedules may change.

In addition to our program suspensions, all public performances have been suspended during this time, including our March recital hour and our annual collaboration with the Harlem Chamber Players originally scheduled for March 21st. We are hoping to reschedule all events for a later date this school year if at all possible.

We are doing this to keep as many people as safe and healthy as possible, and per recommendations from government agencies. Please understand we do not make this decision lightly.

Our goal continues to be to deliver as much planned instruction as possible this school year. To that end, staff are working with faculty as quickly as possible to move instruction online for private lessons. Students, families and faculty will receive further communications from staff members throughout the day today and through next week. We are grateful for your continued patience and creativity as we embark on this new territory.

Opus 118 staff will be working off-site during this time, but we will be available during our normal hours by email and through the Opus 118 phone, 646-842-2775.

I want to be sure to thank all of you for your patience and understanding during these trying times. We have been greatly inspired by your continued commitment to arts education no matter the circumstance.

Sincerely,

Hayley Collins
Director, Programs and Development

Opus 118 Has Moved!

Opus 118 is excited to have moved in with Central Park East II Middle and Elementary Schools at their new location! As of September 4, 2018, we are located at 433 E 100th Street (entrance off of E 101st Street and 1st Avenue) in room 301D.

We have found that when looking up directions for how to get to the school, it’s best to put 1960 1st Avenue as the end destination because that is right in front of the walk way that leads to the front entrance (marked in red on the map below).

Administrative hours are 9AM-5PM Monday through Friday.  Come visit us!

Giving Tuesday!

Today is Giving Tuesday and Opus 118 is excited to participate! In celebration of this day of charity, we thought it would be a good time to remind our supporters of the different ways people can get involved with us!

  • Donate Instruments Many of our students cannot afford to buy or rent an instrument, and would be grateful to inherit your gently used violin, viola, cello, or guitar. We are also always in need of violin cases in good condition for the instruments used in our In-School Program. If you are looking to donate any of these items of any size, please reach out to us by phone at 646-842-2775 or by email at hcollins@opus118.org with more information.

  • Shop Did you know that you can make a contribution to Opus 118 just by shopping at Amazon? By clicking here before you shop, a percentage of all qualifying purchases will be given to Opus 118. Want to shop even more? We also have an Amazon Wishlist that can be found here, where we will post supplies that we really need.

  • Volunteer We are always looking for volunteers for events, mailings, and more! Please reach out to our registrar by phone at 646-842-2775 or by email at kharoldson@opus118.org if you are interested in joining in on the fun!

  • Subscribe Making regular, monthly donations in varying amounts can help Opus 118 greatly! For instance:
-$18 a month could help us purchase a brand new instrument for a student in our In-School Program
-$118 a month would pay for a student to take private lessons for an entire year
To set up a monthly donation to Opus 118 by phone, please call Katherine at 646-842-2775 or sign up for monthly donations on our Paypal site here!

Thank you for your support in providing access to quality music education to all East Harlem students!
